....with this question:
"Can GOD create a rock too heavy for him to lift?"
Incidentally this question was raised by a Mendota teacher to his 5th grade class...are ye smarter than a fifth-grade teacher?

Matthew 19:26. (It's a matter of interpretation as to how you answer this.)
ReplyDeleteP.S. Can they talk about this in public school? :-) Or should someone contact the ACLU on behalf of the atheists?
The Paradox of the Stone or The Omnipotence Paradox.
ReplyDeleteThis is an old philosophy discussion. I think Saint Thomas Aquinas had it right.
Aquinas’ understanding of omnipotence survives the paradox of the stone. For if God exists then he is a being that can lift all stones. A stone that is so heavy that God cannot lift it is therefore an impossible object. According to Aquinas’ understanding of omnipotence, remember, God is able to do anything possible, but not anything impossible, and creating a stone that God cannot lift is something impossible.
Aquinas can therefore answer the question "No" without compromising divine omnipotence.
The evil babysitter agrees to play Calvinball with Calvin et Hobbes, saying, "It's as if you're making it up as you go along!" To the which (or to the witch) Calvin calls to the Chief Tiger 1st Class, "Run, Hobbes, she's stumbled onto the perimeter of wisdom!!!"
ReplyDeleteOr to summarize as if with the knights of the round table at Plato's cave faced with "no ordinary rabbit,":
""RUN AWAY RUN AWAY!!!!!!""
(But we have the Holy Hand Grenade!!!)
((Is it Calvin et Hobbes; or Hobbes et Calvin?"
ReplyDeleteThe Calvinball theme song
ReplyDelete"Other kids' games are all such a bore!
They've gotta have rules and they gotta keep score!
Calvinball is better by far!
It's never the same! It's always bizarre!
You don't need a team or a referee!
You know that it's great, 'cause it's named after me!
If you wanna..."
